What is a Psychologist?

Knowing who the right person to contact is can be confusing.  There are differences in training and focus among mental health professionals.  There are psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and social workers.  Each offers specific skills and training.

A Clinical Psychologist is a specialist in evaluating, diagnosing and treating emotional and behavioral difficulties.  Psychologists have a doctoral degree which takes about six years in graduate school after completion of an undergraduate degree.  Additionally, psychologists are required to obtain pre- and post-graduate experience and supervision with an experienced clinician before working and practicing independently.

Psychologists are licensed by the State of Georgia to practice by passing a standardized written test and individual oral exam by the State Board of Psychologists after completing graduate work.  Additionally, to maintain a license to practice independently psychologists are required to complete ongoing continuing education in the field.

Professional credentials are important and do matter.  Training is what differentiates a professional from the help available from a trusted friend.  Other less obvious skills of a good therapist are empathy, compassion and wisdom.  While therapy is not a friendship, you should feel comfortable and understood.
